About Us

Our History

Missionaries of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) arrived at Amritsar on February 9, 1852 and soon, after consolidating their work, they began to spread it into the adjoining areas. In 1866, Mian Sadiq, a son of a headman of Narowal, respected and trusted in missionary circles, opened the Batala mission.  Soon the Church Of England Zenana Missionary Society (CEZMS) selected Batala as a mission station and opened five schools  which were exclusively reserved for the education and emancipation of the women of the tehsil. Mian Sadiq took responsibility for the general supervision of the school.

In 1877, Mian Sadiq persuaded Miss Charlotte Maria Tucker to adopt Batala as her home.Francis Henry Baring, along with Babu Ishan Chandra Singha, opened a school in the outskirts of the Batala city with the view to educate. However, the Anarkali seems to have attracted him because of its commodious accommodation, which would provide his school the basic needs to function. At the same time all three together, Rev. Baring, Miss Tucker and Babu Singha, worked as a team to promote education and evangelism among the people of the area. With these ends in mind, on March 28, 1878, Rev. Baring left Amritsar to start the Batala Boys  Boarding  School with the twofold purpose of promoting education and spreading the gospel in the Batala tehsil. The present Baring School, resuscitated in 1973, the college established in 1944, and the Christian Institute of Religious Studies established as recently as 1966, . Also Baring School Jandiala Guru in 2016 and Baring Institute Of Theology in 2020 were established. Baring is further expanding its educational activity by opening a Baring School at Ajnala.
